The tour departs in the morning, first ascending the hill out of Taiohae offering magnificent panoramic views back across the sea, then descending into the valley of Taipivai, which is home to the largest coconut grove in Polynesia. In his book Typee, American novelist Herman Melville made the valley well-known.You arrive at the renowned Hatiheu valley for lunch, which is served every day except Sunday at the neighborhood restaurant “Chez Yvonne,” following a meeting with Marquesan craftsmen in the town of Taipivai and a guided tour of the Paeke and Kamuihei archaeological sites.The afternoon’s high point is a guided tour of the Hikokua ancient ceremonial site, which features spectacular viewing platforms and both modern and antique architecture.
