Your journey begins as you arrive at Bonriki International Airport on South Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati. After clearing customs, you’ll be greeted by your local guide and transferred to your accommodation. Take some time to settle in and soak up the peaceful island atmosphere. Later in the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner featuring local I-Kiribati cuisine, accompanied by traditional music and dance performances—an introduction to the warm hospitality and rich culture of the islands.
Today is dedicated to discovering the cultural and historical depth of Kiribati. You’ll begin with a visit to the Kiribati Cultural Museum and the Parliament House to learn about the country’s heritage, traditional governance, and colonial past. In the afternoon, explore World War II sites on Betio, including Japanese bunkers, gun placements, and the Red Beach landing site, where fierce battles once took place. A local lunch of fresh seafood and tropical fruits will be served along the way. You’ll also have the chance to try your hand at traditional crafts, like weaving or shell art, in a village setting.
A short journey by boat or across the causeway brings you to the tranquil islets of Abatao and Buota. Here, you’ll experience a slower pace of life in remote island villages surrounded by palm trees and crystal-clear waters. Enjoy a cultural demonstration of coconut husking and toddy collection, then relax on the beach or go for a swim in the warm lagoon. The day offers plenty of time to enjoy the unspoiled beauty of the northern islets before returning to South Tarawa in the late afternoon.
This morning is a chance to connect more deeply with local life. Visit a nearby school or community health clinic to gain insight into the challenges and resilience of island living. For those interested, there may be an opportunity to participate in a local conservation or sustainability initiative. In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to relax by the beach, visit the market for local crafts and snacks, or join in casual games with the village children. As the sun sets, enjoy a beachside barbecue with freshly grilled fish and seasonal fruits.
For a deeper cultural experience, you may choose to take an optional flight or boat ride to Tabiteuea North, one of the outer islands. Life here follows ancient rhythms, and the experience offers a rare chance to stay with a host family, sleep in a traditional maneaba (meeting house), and participate in daily village activities. Listen to stories passed down by elders, learn about star navigation, and witness traditional dance in its authentic setting. Note: this outer island visit is subject to weather and transportation schedules.
If you traveled to an outer island, today you’ll return to South Tarawa. Otherwise, enjoy a full day at your leisure to revisit favorite spots, relax by the lagoon, or take part in optional water activities such as kayaking or paddleboarding. Use this time to reflect on your experiences and connect further with the people you’ve met. In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner featuring I-Kiribati cuisine and storytelling—your final taste of this unique and heartfelt culture.
On your final day, enjoy breakfast at your accommodation before transferring to Bonriki International Airport. As you say farewell to Kiribati, you’ll carry with you memories of warm island hospitality, fascinating history, and serene tropical beauty that will stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
