Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Port Moresby

Arrive at Jacksons International Airport, Port Moresby. Meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you can enjoy a short city orientation or visit the National Museum and Art Gallery, showcasing the diverse tribal heritage of PNG.

Day 2Fly to Mount Hagen – Gateway to the Highlands

Take a domestic flight to Mount Hagen, located in the heart of the Western Highlands. Enjoy a scenic drive past coffee plantations and highland villages. In the afternoon, visit local markets and traditional gardens.

Overnight: Mount Hagen Lodge or guesthouse

Day 3Highlands Cultural Experience

Spend the day immersed in the culture of the Melpa people. Enjoy traditional sing-sings (dances), learn about tribal customs, and visit a spirit house (haus tambaran). This is also a great opportunity to see traditional highland dress, including elaborate feathered headdresses and body paint.

Day 4Mount Hagen to Goroka – Scenic Drive Through the Highlands

Travel overland to Goroka, home of the famous Goroka Show. Along the way, stop at coffee plantations and small villages. This scenic route offers incredible views of the central highlands.

Day 5Asaro Mudmen & Cultural Encounters

Today, meet the legendary Asaro Mudmen, known for their eerie clay masks and ghost-like performances. Visit local villages, observe bilum (woven bag) making, and learn about traditional highland survival techniques.

Day 6Fly to Madang – Coastal Beauty and WWII History

Take a short flight to Madang, one of PNG’s most picturesque coastal towns. After check-in, visit WWII relics, including sunken ships and bunkers, and enjoy a walk along the palm-fringed waterfront.

Day 7Snorkeling & Island Hopping

Enjoy a day exploring the Bismarck Sea, with a boat tour to nearby islands. Snorkel among vibrant coral reefs, visit traditional fishing villages, and relax on secluded beaches.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8Fly to Tari – Home of the Huli Wigmen

Fly to Tari in the Southern Highlands, home to the famous Huli Wigmen. Upon arrival, transfer to a local lodge surrounded by rainforest. Learn about the Huli’s incredible ceremonial wigs, body decoration, and spiritual beliefs.

Overnight: Ambua Lodge or similar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9Huli Culture & Highland Exploration

Spend a full day discovering Huli culture. Visit traditional homesteads, sacred sites, and watch a performance by the Huli Wigmen. You’ll also have opportunities for rainforest walks to waterfalls and birdwatching (look out for Birds of Paradise!).

Day 10Return to Port Moresby – Departure

Fly back to Port Moresby. Depending on your international flight time, you may have time for a visit to the Port Moresby Nature Park or a local craft market before your airport transfer.
